Mentors are key in helping Mentees make positive life choices and stay on-track to complete the necessary education and/or training to achieve their career goals. Together, they meet regularly to navigate the complexities of the student’s academic journey and the daunting obstacles and financial challenges inherent in their path. By working on goals and executable strategies, students move forward with their education and career plans.
Mentors meet the student where they are, working with them on the following:
- Soft skills such as time management, communication, and asking for help.
- Evaluating career pathways and required education or training requirements.
- Preparing transfer applications and researching and applying for scholarships.
- Navigating the complexities of higher education and office/company cultures.
- Critically thinking through decisions and brainstorming outcomes.
- Working through external factors (family pressures, work commitments, mental health, personal finance).
Mentor Lifecycle
Mentors attend two virtual training sessions before meeting with staff at the Future Link office to learn about their Mentee and for their first Mentee/Mentor meeting. Continuous support is provided once matched with a Mentee. An initial one-year commitment is required, with an option to extend beyond that time frame. Mentors must be 30+ years of age, live or work in the DC metropolitan area, and have at least a bachelor’s degree with five years of work experience in their career field.
